Here are the folks lined up to perform featured sets at our upcoming in-person and online events in October:
Oct. 4 at the Friends’ Meeting House
- Dylan Brown is always digging for unique songs to share. Playing a variety of instruments, he explores traditional songs from across the British Isles, singing about heartbreak, tragedy, and the sea. (15-minute set)
- Shirley Wiebe & Frank Szijarto: Shirley is a visual artist who picked up a keepsake guitar in 2009 and has been playing, singing and writing songs ever since. Many of her songs are based on prairie places and stories of her childhood. Frank Szijarto is a mostly self-taught introverted guitarist. Shirley and Frank have been together for a decade and have played together as long, mostly in private. Both love the VFSS atmosphere and have performed at the VFSS once before. (15-minute set)
- Brian Robertson: Vancouver based folk musician Brian Robertson is best known for his authentic, well-crafted songs about the region and its history, as well as some with more universal themes of love, travel, social justice and the blues. A west coast original and longtime member of the VFSS, Brian’s wit and warmth make him, yes, a genuine BC treasure. For more, check out brianrobertson.ca/ (30-minute set)
Oct. 18 at the Friends’ Meeting House & live-streamed to Zoom
- Lucien started his musical journey at age 18. His musical discipline soon grew into a passion as he was inspired by various folk artists, and is now often found busking throughout Vancouver. Lucien is continuing to grow his skills and meet other musicians through gigs and open mic’s. (15-minute set)
- Sharon McIntee Birrell’s musical roots have ranged broadly, from the Royal Toronto Conservatory and the Vancouver Actors Chorus, through Oklahoma and South Pacific, to church choirs and Edmonton coffee houses. Sharon writes, “At this stage of my life, music must do one of two things – 1. Touch my heart or 2. Get my feet tapping.” Based on Sharon’s past performance at the VFSS, her music achieves both of these, in spades. (15-minute set)
- Henk Piket: Ever since his early days as a stalwart of Vancouver’s folk club and coffeehouse scene in the 1960’s, Henk Piket’s fingerstyle guitar and warm bass voice have accentuated his range of repertoire from country and jazz standards to the traditional and contemporary folk and blues that he loves so well. One of the original members of Fraser Union and longtime member of the VFSS, Henk brings joy and depth to any musical gathering. (30-minute set)
