July 30: Fifth Wednesday Special
Scottish Labour and Political Song — a presentation by Jon Bartlett
Wednesday, July 30, 2025 | 7:30 pm (doors at 7:00)
Secret Lantern Society, 1398 East 3rd Ave., Vancouver, BC
Fifth Wednesdays revive a long-standing VFSS tradition of offering thematic programs, usually an opportunity for members to learn something new about a specific topic.
July’s edition will feature VFSS life member Jon Bartlett, giving a presentation on Scottish labour and political song, followed by an opportunity for Q&A/discussion, and some singing (bring your relevant songs)!
In addition to serving on the VFSS board for years, Jon worked with Phil Thomas to produce Songs of the Pacific Northwest and has also written or co-authored well-regarded books on BC labour history. In partnership with his wife Rika Ruebsaat, they have recorded CDs of traditional Canadian songs and made presentations in schools and at conferences, melding facts and music into new and sometimes surprising tales about ourselves and our country.
The event will be graciously hosted at the Secret Lantern Society (1398 E 3rd Ave.,); tea and cookies will be provided, other snacky contributions welcome!
