Which Are the Longest-Running Folk Clubs?

When it comes to folk clubs, we would much rather be singing than competing for “oldest” status.

However, as the VFSS approaches its seventh decade still going strong, we wanted to take a look around. It’s helpful to know where we have been, and who’s been there with us. As time goes on and folk music evolves, it may be helpful to know which other folk clubs have been around for a long time.

According to the Mudcat forum, here are the nine longest-running folk clubs in the world:
  1. San Francisco Folk Music Club (US) – founded 1948
  2. Bush Music Club (Aus) – founded 1954
  3. Topic in Bradford (UK) – founded 1956
  4. Bridge Folk Club Newcastle (UK) – 1958
  5. Edinburgh University Folk Society (UK) – April 1958
  6. Vancouver Folk Song Society (Can) – July 1959
  7. The Folksong Society of Greater Boston (US) – 1959
  8. Victorian Folk Music Club (Aus) – est. 1959 as Bush Music Club of Victoria, name changed 1963
  9. Glasgow Folk Club – 1959
Accordingly, the Vancouver Folk Song Society is the 6th longest-running folk club in the world, the 2nd in North America, and the longest-running in Canada.
