On Wednesday, March 4, the Vancouver Folk Song Society hosted a special event in honour of International Women’s Day. Focusing on women’s songs, women’s voices and women’s issues, the evening was both celebratory and educational. It featured 28 fabulous female performers sharing a mixture of traditional, contemporary and original songs.
From “Rosie the Riveter (Revisited)” to “The Witch of the Westmorland,” each song offered a unique look at what it means to walk in the world as a woman. In addition to the individual performances, the group came together to sing the traditional tune, “Bread and Roses” and “I Am Not Free” by Penny Stone.
The organizers, performers and audience created a special atmosphere for women’s voices to be heard—both literally and figuratively. Not only did the songs celebrate women, but the room resounded with many multipart harmonies as women (and allies) sang in solidarity and support.
“The spirit of the room was something special… the music, original songs, the laughter, the feeling of everyone really holding one another,” reflected one participant.
More than raising awareness, the event and the women’s song circle held a few days prior, brought women from across the society together to learn from each other, collaborate, deepen connections – and have fun.
The event shattered attendance records, both in-person and online. We can’t wait for the next one!
