July 15: Wednesday Night Folk

Shadowfax is an alt-folk band from North Vancouver, British Columbia, with a style that incorporates influences from folk ballad, bluegrass, shoegaze and jazz. Their music draws from various mythologies and folk tales – from Orpheus and Eurydice to Rip Van Winkle and will o’ the wisps – punctuated by rotating instrumentation including pedal steel, horns, and the occasional theremin, and employs lush arrangements with lyrics favouring fantastical narratives that tackle themes of environmentalism, the complex feelings of grieving imperfect loved ones, and personal accountability for failed relationships.

In 2023 Shadowfax collaborated with JUNO-nominated producer Adam Iredale-Gray and JUNO-winner Chris Gestrin to release their debut album, Orpheus. Since then they have performed with such heavyweights as Alain Johannes of the bands Eleven, Them Crooked Vultures, and Queens of the Stone Age, Laila Biali, and Brad Turner. Since releasing Orpheus they can be found weaving spider silk bonnets in nearby glades.
