It is early morning. The rain has stopped. The garden is soaked. The rain barrels are full. A robin warbles in the distance.

Poplar leaves lift and settle as a gentle breeze drifts down Semlin Drive. Crows shout at each other from the high branches of an ancient fir tree.

This is music. This is what folk music means to me.

I live a modest life, structered by necessary chores re-done day after day. I write songs about the quotidian tasks of daily life and the meaning of that work in terms of life on earth and the astronomical movement of the universe. These are inseparable experiences. Music helps me make sense of the paradox, the baffling conundrum of being human, of life, death, family, and cleaning up after my shedding rescue shepherd.

I look for the unsung, the unspoken, what has been taken for-granted or taken advantage. I look for those who abide, who quietly, competently, bring us forward, to live, to laugh and to sing.

I hope my music inspires us, and strengthens us, in the face of difficulty and adversity, to remember that we are not alone and we are doing important work. In our constancy we prevail to see a better world for those who follow.

The sun is rising, the sky lightens, another day is underway.
