Last of the Founders, Jeanie Cox (Moss), 1923 – 2024

We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of Jeanie Cox (Moss) at the age of 100, the last survivor of the five founders of the Vancouver Folk Song Society. She and Al Cox became friends with Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger in the early days of the Folk Revival. The following obituary was published in the Vancouver Sun:

COX (MOSS), Jeanie
Sep. 22, 1923 – Jan. 18, 2024

Jeanie Allan was born in West Vancouver where she spent her school years. Frequent family trips were made on the Union Steamships to visit her father in logging camps on Vancouver Island and at Powell River/Stillwater. Jeanie attended UBC, entered Nursing at VGH in 1942, graduated 1945, and began her long career as a Registered Nurse.

She married Albert Cox in 1946 upon his return from Active Service in Europe, WW II. Their three children, David (Susan), Eleanor, and Barbara (Dan), were born while Albert studied at UBC and the University of Toronto.

Mom was one of the founding members of the Vancouver Folk Song Society which celebrates its 65th Anniversary this year. Many memorable parties were hosted at our home on West 14th Avenue. You never knew who might be found singing in the living room.

Affectionately known as “Nana”, Mom was exceptionally devoted to her six grandchildren, Kelsi, Neil, Dylan, Kieran, Paul, and Natalie. She would have so enjoyed the lively antics of her great grandchildren, Saylor and Peter.

Proud of her heritage, Mom’s strong Scottish stock allowed us to celebrate her 100th birthday on September 22, 2023. The longer Mom was with us, the more memories we are left to share. Mom’s passing is difficult but she would have said, “I’m weary wi’ hunting, and fain wald lie doon” (Ballad of Lord Randall).

Jeanie died peacefully on January 18 at Blenheim Lodge where she lived for the last 10 years. Service arrangements will be made.
